Yue is an international student from China who came to Canada in 2014 to pursue her BBA with the goal of joining the family business. However, art had been a major part of her life throughout childhood and was the major she chose in high school. In 2017, after two years of study in the BBA program, Yue lost her direction and returned to the free artistic creation she loved.
Canada’s environment and geography changed her artistic vision and concepts, giving Yue a new creative direction. Combining elements of Chinese cultural characteristics with her love of printmaking technology, she recreates both her worlds in art. Plums and orchids, bamboo and chrysanthemums in poetry or architecture and folklore are often featured in her prints.
Strongly identifying with Xu Bing, a printmaking artist who resides in New York and China, Yue hopes that, as an “other” from overseas, she too, can find a sense of cultural identity. She plans to continue learning and innovating means of presenting the local culture of her heritage.
